Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I check in? Where should I park?
There will be a registration desk set up on Public Square, directly in front of the Terminal Tower, on the Square side of the street. Volunteers will check you in, and help you unload your drums from your car.

A volunteer will carefully deliver your drums to your designated spot and wait with your equipment while you park.

You will be given a parking pass to park in the BP parking lot off Superior. Park your car, then return to the performance area.

What kind of drummers do you need?
We still need a lot of drummers.
We are especially in need of East Asian drummers (China, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Laos, etc.), Eastern European and East and South African.
We have our quota of kit (drum set) players.

Please feel free to pass along any information to your drummer friends, drum newsgroups, etc. Refer them to this web site to sign up.

What instruments do you need?
We need not just drums, but also shakers, bells, blocks, ... All things percussion!

A full list of the instruments people have so far committed to bring is on the Featured Drummers page.

We could definitely use more drums from East Asia (China, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Laos, etc.), Eastern Europe and East and South Africa.
We do not need any more kit (drum set) players.

Can dancers participate?
What would drumming be without dancing?
Drums and dance are integral to each other. While this event is not choreographed, dancers are welcome to respond and move to the rhythm.

You are welcome to dance anywhere where you won't get in the way of drummers or break the sight line between the conductor(s) and the drummers. You can dance in the street, on ledges and in the pathway that cuts down the middle of the orchestra.
Just be careful!

Included in our orchestra of drummers are some truly world-class performers. Check us out on the Featured Drummers page!

Do I need to be able to read sheet music?
No. It is not necessary to read sheet music to participate in this performance. However, you do need to make the time to familiarize yourself with the conductor's cues. Photos/diagrams of the cues will be made available on this website (soon!). They will also be demonstrated at the rehearsal.

Is there anything I should be practicing?
We're going to be assembling some short audio tracks of rhythm sequences. We will put them up onto this web site, and you should practice them until they are comfortable.

What should I bring to the performance?
You should bring all the instruments you would like to play. There will be a procession following the performance - we will walk to another stage several blocks away to hear Ernie Krivda and his band play a special set. If you would like to be a part of this procession, you might want to limit yourself to instruments you can comfortable carry for several blocks.
If that is not possible - your drum(s) are too big - there will be volunteers to assist you in wrangling them back to your car.

Also - this will be an outdoor concert. In Cleveland. In July.
Keep a careful eye on the weather, and bring whatever supplies you might need to be comfortable outside for several hours. (bug spray, bottled water, sunscreen, ...)

What should I wear to the performance?
There are not currently any formal costume requirements for performers.

You are encouraged to wear traditional clothing of your culture or drum, or regalia of your own design. Be creative!

Or...dress to honor the godesses who inspired this symphony:
Oshun likes yellow and gold. Ma'at is represented by a feather.

Otherwise, dress however you like.

Will the performance be recorded?
Absolutely! We will be recording audio and video of the performance. These recordings may be used for commercial purposes at some later date, either to help us recoup some of our costs or to support future endeavors of the Symphony for 1000 Drums and/or Ingenuity. Individual performers are not entitled to royalty fees based on future sales of any such recordings, but will be credited in any future publications.
